One of the leading English language institutes in Canada, the TESL Centre at Saint Mary’s University offers Intensive English Programs on a beautiful urban campus moments from a forest park on the Atlantic Ocean. The TESL Centre is located in Halifax, capital of the province of Nova Scotia and financial centre of Eastern Canada. Halifax is renowned for its combination of historic charm, modern amenities and warm hospitality. Although Halifax is a typically multicultural Canadian city, its largely English-speaking environment is perfect if you are interested in improving your English skills.
At Saint Mary's University we offer a variety of English programs depending on your needs: English for Academic Purposes, English for Personal and Professional Communication, our University Bridging Program and a One-month ESL Immersion program. Instructors in all programs are enthusiastic and highly-trained; most have a Master’s degree in TESL or applied linguistics, speak a second language themselves and have taught English abroad. Saint Mary’s Intensive English Program is accredited by the prestigious Canada Language Council. The comprehensive CLC Quality Assurance Scheme covers curriculum, instructor qualifications, student services, admissions, marketing, promotion, facilities and administration. The Council's standards are internationally recognized and your guarantee of a quality program.
For those of you who are interested in continuing your education at Saint Mary’s, conditional admission to undergraduate programs is available. Those who successfully complete the highest level of our EAP program (Level Six) do not have to write a TOEFL® test or other language test to meet the University’s language requirement.
All our intensive programs include a full schedule of social and cultural activities so you can practice English in fun and interesting ways. Activities vary depending on the season but typically include harbour cruises, shopping trips, indoor rock climbing, step-dancing lessons, conversation lunches, apple-picking and skiing. All activities are led by our friendly and knowledgeable Cultural Assistants, undergraduate and graduate students here at the University.
You can request on-campus residence or homestay, or can arrange your own off-campus accommodation in this lively university city. You can also take advantage of a variety of campus services which include 24 hour computer labs with free e-mail and internet access, cafeterias, a full-time International Student Advisor, health clinic, bookstore, gymnasium and more. The TESL Centre also offers a Conversation Partner/Language Exchange program (when available).
