TEACHING METHODOLOGY AT ESE

At ESE we follow the Council of Europe and the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) system by which the language competency levels is defined. These ALTE levels range from A1 (roughly equivalent to elementary level) to C2 (very advanced). More information can be reviewed on our website or at http://www.alte.org/can_do/general.php. Every student is tested and interviewed on his/her first day of attendance at ESE in order to establish the student’s correct level. Furthermore the class teacher will analyse and monitor the specific needs of the student to ensure the students’ progress.
At ESE we favour the eclectic approach to teaching. This means that we include techniques and activities from several approaches in our teaching. Through eclecticism teachers are better qualified to help the students learn as required on a personal-needs basis. A needs-analysis is carried out at the beginning of the course to enable the teacher to target the students’ needs much more accurately and plan lessons to suit the needs of the learners. Different approaches may include drills (this is the repetitive oral practice of a language item), communicative language techniques (the direct approach where learners are not taught grammar or any rules but are allowed to discover them from their own experience) or deductively (where learners are taught rules).
The communicative approach in English language teaching focuses on meaningful communication and language practice in the classroom. The teacher gives importance to fluency, accuracy and communication involving the integration of the 4 language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Lessons are 45 minutes long with a coffee/lunch break every 2 lessons.
