SANTIAGO DE CHILE

The city has a blend of contrasts, old colonial and ultra modern, energizing street scenes and quite parks, elegant shopping and street markets, exciting nightlife and romantic restaurants. Combined with beautiful countryside and the majestic Andes to explore just minutes from the city, what better place to learn Spanish than in Santiago?

Santiago, Chile's capital is nestled in a valley with the Andes as a backdrop. Centrally located, it makes the perfect base from which to visit both Northern and Southern Chile, as well as to see the sights of the central region. Santiago's climate is mild and Mediterranean, very similar to Northern California. Although winters are mild, when it rains in Santiago, it's snowing in the Andes, and for those who like to ski youÂ’ll be glad to know that the Ski areas of Valle Nevado, Colorado and La Parva are only an hour away. The coast, west of Santiago, is beautiful and fun to visit any time of year but particularly in the summer. There are numerous popular beaches, wonderful scenery, and many resorts as well as rustic small coastal towns.

In theory you could go skiing, play tennis and lie on the beach all in the same day! Founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago is now an interesting mixture of Colonial, Victorian and ultra-modern office buildings. ItÂ’s a very safe and comfortable city, where youÂ’ll find its 5,000,000 people very friendly and hospitable to all foreigners. Here you have the charm and culture of Latin America with all the amenities of the first world.
