 | The University of Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP)
The IIEP provides intensive English instruction and a cultural, social, and academic orientation to the United States. Instruction emphasizes spoken and written English crucial to university work in the U.S. The basic language skills of grammar, writing, reading, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and conversation are taught each day in all levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced). Each student receives 20 hours of instruction per week in addition to individual work in the language laboratory. Because class size is small (12-14), each student receives personal supervision and encouragement. A wide variety of methods and materials is used to provide a high-quality language learning opportunity.
Our intensive English classes are small—usually eight to twelve students—and all of our teachers have master’s degrees.
Field trips and recreational and social experiences are an integral part of the IIEP. Past students have traveled to Chicago, visited local historical sites and museums, and attended professional baseball games. Many opportunities exist to speak with or to hear native speakers through such regular activities as movies, lectures, and sports on the University campus. Students have full access to all University services, activities, and facilities.
The Iowa Intensive English Program at The University of Iowa is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and agrees to uphold the CEA standards for English Language Programs.
