China Foreign Affairs University

China Foreign Affairs University, the only institution of higher learning under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, aims to training personnel for professional careers in Foreign Service, international studies as well as in other careers related to international business and law. The university was founded in 1955, at the personal urging of the late Premier Zhou Enlai. The current President is Mr. Wu Jianmin, chairman of International Bureau of Exhibition, former Chinese Ambassador to France.

CFAU has the following departments: Department of Diplomacy, Department of English and International Studies, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of International Law, and Department of International Economics. It also houses the Research Institute of International Law, Research Institute of International Relations, Graduate School, Institute of Continuing Education, International Exchange Centre, International Students Section, and other teaching and research facilities. The China International Law Society and the China Society of International Relations have their secretariats on the campus.

CFAU has concurrently a 400-strong faculty and staff, among whom 170 or so are licensed full-time instructors. In addition, CFAU has engaged some 70 guest professors who are renowned scholars, specialists, academics and senior diplomats. Every year, more than 20 foreign experts and instructors in related specialties are recruited from around the world to augment the teaching staff.

CFAU offers Baccalaureate, Master and Doctoral degrees. CFAU also offers year-long professional and language training programs designed for both domestic and foreign diplomats. At present, CFAU enrolls over 2,400 Chinese students and around 100 international students in various disciplines.

CFAU operates on a two-term basis. The autumn term begins in September and ends in January the ensuing year, and the spring term begins in March and ends in July. Enrollment of degree applicants only takes place in the autumn term.
