Certificado Básico de Español de los Negocios

The Certificado Básico de Español de Negocios is considered as proof of elementary knowledge of business Spanish. Candidates should have reached the level of grammar knowledge corresponding to the intermedio level of the Instituto Cervantes curriculum before taking the examination. It is expected that the candidates are able to express themselves and handle situations of everyday life as well as fundamental business activities (telephone contact, customer service, discussions, etc.). They should also be able to understand simple texts from different departments and be able to write commercial correspondence, messages, questionnaires and other materials. Developing press articles about economic or occupation-related topics is also important.

Structure

Written exam

  • Written expression; 60 points (one hour 30 minutes)
  • Reading comprehension; 20 points (20 minutes)
  • Language proficiency; 20 points (30 minutes)
  • Creation of texts; 20 points (40 minutes)

Oral exam

  • Oral expression; 20 points (eight minutes)


Results

The exam has a total of 80 points. In order to pass the exam, the candidates must have at least 40 points including 30 points from the written exam and 10 points from the oral exam. A candidate can fail the exam if they receive zero points in one of the test sections. Anyone who fails the written examination has no chance to take the verbal examination. No documents or dictionaries may be used during the examination. A candidate can also fail the exam if the answers are given in illegible handwriting.
