Diploma Internacional de Español (DIE)

The DIE is recognized as proof of Spanish language knowledge by the department for Spanish language and regional studies of the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca. The DIE is for children (starting at age seven), young people, adults and working persons, who want proof of their verbal and written Spanish knowledge. The diploma is offered in different competence levels:

Ten verbal levels are summarised in five stages of competence: elemental, básico, intermedio, avanzado and superior (each of these stages covers two levels).
Five written levels: elemental, básico, intermedio, avanzado and superior.
Four levels of specialisation: Teacher of Spanish as a foreign language, gastronomy, tourism and health.

Structure

  • Elemental (level 1-2); candidates must talk with an examiner (six to seven minutes)
  • Básico (level 3-4); candidates must prepare and give a speech about a pre-determined theme (10 minutes)
  • Intermedio (level 5-6); candidates must give a speech about a theme that they have chosen and prepared, as well as a speech that the examiner selects from a list chosen by the candidate (15 minutes)
  • Avanzado (level 7-8); candidates must give a speech about a theme that they have chosen and prepared, as well as a speech that the examiner selects from a list chosen by the candidate (20 minutes)
  • Superior (level 9-10); candidates must give a speech about a theme that they have chosen and prepared, as well as two additional speeches that the examiner selects from a list chosen by the candidate. The candidate must also answer questions about a text to test their comprehension (25 minutes)

Results

The test has a total of 100 points, distributed into the following criteria:

In order to pass the test, candidates must have at least 65% of the total points. When the candidate has 85% or more, they will receive a pass with distinction (Diploma con distinción). The minimum score in every criteria must be achieved in order to pass the exam.

The written and oral sections are considered two different tests and can be taken together or individually. A certificate will only be distributed for each section that has been completed.

The DIE test can be taken in Spain or in locations worldwide. Dates are determined by the testing centers and institutions offering the programme. It is possible to take the DIE online. Those interested can complete the DIE certificate at their school or at public or private language schools.

Anyone who already exhibits a certain level of Spanish knowledge can take the examinations. There is no special preparatory course required and examinations can be taken throughout the year. Usually, the schools offering the certificate determine the dates according to the interests of the candidate. The verbal examinations are flexibly arranged, giving the candidate the opportunity to select the topics for the verbal examination according to his interests. The candidates do not have to complete each stage level in order to achieve the highest stage of the examination (superior), instead taking every test according to their knowledge level.

The network of test centers (talk de Centros Examinadores del Diploma Internacinal de Españo) consists of educational facilities, which are accredited by the Foundation for Research and Development of the Spanish Culture (Fundación para la Investigación y el Desarrollo de la Cultura Española).
