Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)
The GDS serves as proof of excellent up to native speaker command of the German language. States the ability of an examinee to negotiate all complex and problematic subjects without any problems, to understand all aspects of a particular field without any difficulties and to handle any type of correspondence and reports. The exam is recognized by all the German higher education institutions as well as by German employers and other institutions and gives the opportunity for studying and working in Germany.
Structure
The structure of the exams varies depending on the university requirements and tasks are rendered in cooperation with Goethe Institut.
Written exam:
- Essay (210 minutes)
- Reading comprehension; content, composition and vocabulary (60 minutes)
- Questions pertaining to a specifically chosen text for checking expression capability (60 minutes)
- Dictation (20 minutes)
- Questions on a topic from specific fields; the offered topics include literature, natural sciences and business sciences
- Questions on applied geography (90 minutes)
Oral exam:
- Reading from a given text (five minutes)
- Free discussion and conversation (20 minutes)
Results
Very good (sehr gut) 1; good (gut) 2; satisfactory (befriedigend) 3; enough (ausreichend) 4; low (mangelhaft) 5; not enough (ungenügend) 6
