Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH)

Candidates taking the DSH must demonstrate that they are able to use the German language for the purpose of education in a higher education institution. This means an advanced understanding of the German language as it is written, heard and spoken in college and university settings. You can reach this level after approximately 800 hours of German. The DSH exam has to be taken not later that one year after matriculation and students can retake the exam one time.


Structure
Written exam:

  • Listening comprehension (75 minutes)
  • Reading comprehension (90 minutes)
  • Written expression in the form of an essay (90 minutes)
  • Linguistic structure comprehension (30 minutes)


Oral exam:
Duration: 20-30 minutes

  • Part 1; discussion of a general or specifically-oriented text
  • Part 2; general conversation


Results

There are 60 points maximum in both the listening comprehension and reading comprehension sections, and 30 points maximum in both the written expression and linguistic structure comprehension sections (maximum score 180 points). At least 2/3 of the attainable points (minimum score 120 points) must be reached in order to be able to take the oral exmination. Participants attaining more than 150 points do not need to take the oral exam.
