Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS)

KDS was established by the Goethe Institut in cooperation with Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich. Most German universities accept this exam as proof of linguistic proficiency for academic studies. Participants are expected not only to read and discuss literary and non-literary texts, but also to give presentations on subjects relevant to aspects of culture and society in German-speaking countries. Additional emphasis is given to written expression and style. The certificate is a proof of fluent language skills and is often required by German employers.


Structure

The structure of the exams varies depending on the university requirements and tasks are rendered in cooperation with Goethe Institut.

Written exam:

  • Understanding a text; content, composition and vocabulary (90 minutes)
  • Questions pertaining to specifically chosen text for checking your capability of expression (60 minutes)
  • Reading tasks (120 minutes)

Oral exam:

  • Reading from a given text (five minutes)
  • Free discussion and conversation (15 minutes)

Very good (1); good (2); satisfactory (3); enough (4); low (5); not enough (6)
