DEPLE (Diploma Elementar de Português Língua Estrangeira)
The DEPLE was established by the Departamento de Língua e Cultura Portuguesa at the University of Lisbon under the authorization of the Portuguese Ministérios dos Negócios Estrangeiros e da Educação (Ministry of Education). The DEPLE corresponds to the ALTE Level B1 or Elementary Level according to the Council of Europe and the required level of proficiency is usually achieved after 350-400 hours of language tuition. The examination is designed for students who wish to prove their Portuguese language proficiency and who are able to communicate in everyday work and study situations.
Structure of exam:
The examination consists of four sections:
- Written comprehension (reading); consists of two parts (30 minutes)
- Written Expression (writing); consists of three parts and forms 25% of the exam grade (one hour 15 minutes)
- Oral Expression (speaking); consists of two tasks and forms 25% of the exam grade (15 minutes)
- Oral Comprehension (listening); consists of two parts and forms 25% of the exam grade (45 minutes)
Results:
There are three passing grades:
- Suficiente (pass); 55-69% of the exam
- Bom (good); 70-84% of the exam
- Muito Bom (very good); 85-100% of the exam
