CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Portugus Lngua Estrangeira)

The CIPLE was established by the Departamento de Língua e Cultura Portuguesa at the University of Lisbon under the authorization of the Portuguese Ministérios dos Negócios Estrangeiros e da Educação (Ministry of Education). The CIPLE corresponds to the ALTE Level A2 or Basic Level according to the Council of Europe and the required level of proficiency is usually reached after 180-200 hours of Portuguese language training. The examination is designed for students who wish to prove their Portuguese language proficiency and are able to communicate in a limited number of standard situations.


Structure

The examination consists of three sections:

  • Written comprehension and expression (reading and writing); Consists of two parts and forms 45% of the exam grade (one hour 15 minutes)
  • Oral comprehension (listening); consists of two parts and forms 30% of the exam grade (30 minutes)
  • Oral expression (speaking); consists of three tasks and forms 25% of the exam grade (10-15 minutes)


Results

There are three passing grades:
Suficiente (pass); 55-69% of the exam
Bom (good); 70-84% of the exam
Muito Bom (very good); 85-100% of the exam
