Test of Russian as a foreign language (TORFL-TRKI 4)
The test of Russian as a foreign language is carried out within the Russian National State Testing System of the Russian Language for Foreigners created by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The exam measures the language proficiency of non-native speakers and their ability to use Russian in formal and informal everyday situations. Candidates who have passed the TORFL receive an officially recognized certificate that serves for educational and business purposes.
This level is referred to as an advanced stage of proficiency close to the native-speaker level and provides high-level final qualification in the language. This level is obligatory for receiving a Master of Arts degree and is recognized for academic purposes in the field of the Russian language.
Structure of exam:
- Reading; consists of four texts (4,000 words) and a total number of 25 multiple-choice, text reconstruction, open and cloze items based on professional or general interest nature as well as fiction
- Writing; consists of three tasks including reproduction of an auditory text in a written form and composition of a discursive or an imperative nature
- Listening; there are four parts and 25 multiple-choice items in the test including short dialogue, discussion, public speech and public interview
- Speaking; consists of three parts including response to auditory texts, role-play and monologue moving into a dialogue-interview
- Structural competence; contains 100 multiple-choice, matching and text reconstruction questions
Results:
Each component is equally weighted at 20% of the total mark. There are three pass grades (A, B and C) and certificates are awarded to all successful candidates. Grade D is unsatisfactory and no certificate is awarded.

- Level B - 75 % - 84 %
- Level C - 66 % - 74 %
- Level D - less than 66 %
