Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) – Elementary Level
The test of Russian as a foreign language is carried out within the Russian National State Testing System of the Russian Language for Foreigners created by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The exam measures the language proficiency of non-native speakers and their ability to use Russian in formal and informal everyday situations. Candidates who have passed the TORFL receive an officially recognized certificate that serves for educational and business purposes.
This level of the TORFL exam tests candidates' ability to satisfy their elementary communicative needs in a limited number of everyday communicative situations.
Structure of the exam:
- Reading; consists of two sections and 30 multiple-choice questions based on short simple extracts from texts
- Writing; consists of writing tasks such as reproduction of biographical text, answering questions, writing a short letter about you, a family member or a person
- Listening; consists of 20 multiple-choice question based on short oral dialogues and monologues on everyday topics from which candidates are expected to extract factual information (topic, essence, intention)
- Speaking; consists of tasks in which candidates are expected to participate in simple dialogues and to carry on a conversation about everyday topics.
- Structural competence; consists of five sections with a total of 100 multiple-choice items
Results:
Each component is equally weighted at 20% of the total mark. There are three pass grades: A, B and C and certificates are awarded to all successful candidates. Grade D is unsatisfactory and certificates are not awarded.
- Level A - 85 % - 100 %
- Level B - 75 % - 84 %
- Level C - 66 % - 74 %
- Level D - less than 66 %
