Test of Russian as a Foreign Language – Basic Level (TORFL-TBU)
The test of Russian as a foreign language is carried out within the Russian National State Testing System of the Russian Language for Foreigners created by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The exam measures the language proficiency of non-native speakers and their ability to use Russian in formal and informal everyday situations. Candidates who have passed the TORFL receive an officially recognized certificate that serves for educational and business purposes.
The TORFL-TBU is an officially recognised certificate that serves as proof of the Russian language proficiency of applicants who have acquired basic communicative skills in a number of daily situations.
Structure of exam:
- Reading; consists of three sections and 30 multiple-choice questions based on short simple authentic texts such as titles of newspapers, magazines, public notices, guides, signs and ads
- Writing; consists of two sections in which candidates are expected to write a short letter, notice or card
- Listening; consists of multiple-choice questions in three sections based on short oral dialogues and monologues on everyday topics from which candidates are expected to extract specific information
- Speaking; consists of four sections including simple conversations, response to questions of conversational nature based on a limited number of everyday situations
- Structural competence; consists of four sections based on knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, with a total of 110 multiple-choice and matching questions
Results:
Each component is equally weighted at 20% of the total grade. There are three passing grades (A, B and C) and certificates are awarded to all successful candidates. Grade D is unsatisfactory and no certificate is awarded.
- Level A - 85 % - 100 %
- Level B - 75 % - 84 %
- Level C - 66 % - 74 %
- Level D - less than 66 %
