Japanese Language Proficiency Test - Level 3

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a standardized test to validate a person's Japanese language proficiency, designed for upper beginners who understand the basics of grammar, can make everyday simple conversations and can read easy, written Japanese. The JLPT is offered by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) in Japan, and the Japan Foundation outside of Japan. Level 3 of the exam (san kyuu) is reached after approximately 300 hours of study and the vocabulary is roughly about 1,500 words.

Structure

  • Characters (hiragana, katakana, kanji) and vocabulary; 100 points (35 minutes)
  • Listening comprehension; 100 points (35 minutes)
  • Reading comprehension and grammar; 200 points (70 minutes)


Results

The exam lasts 140 minutes and a candidate can obtain a total of 400 points. At least 60% of the 400 points is needed to pass.
