BTG (Bunteastas Gaeilge)

The BTG was established by the Institiúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann (ITÉ), the Linguistics Institute of Ireland, and is based on the Council of Europe's Threshold Level specification. Candidates should be capable of communicating in social and work situations.

Structure

  • Reading - The reading section consists of exercises that are based on articles from newspapers ,magazines and simple literary and historical texts with up to 500 words. Candidates have to show skills of scanning and gist reading.
  • Writing - The writing section consists of gap-filling and form-filling exercises, transformations and a 120-word text composition. The text has to convey specified information and attitudes.
  • Listening - The listening test lasts 30 minutes and consists of 30 items, including multiple-choice items and gap-filling tasks. Candidates are expected to have comprehensive understanding and ability to pick out the main point, arguments and intentions.
  • Speaking - The speaking section last 10-12 minutes and candidates are tested individually or in pairs. They have to introduce themselves, express opinions on a variety of topics and perform simple role-plays.


Results

Each component carries 25% of the marks. Successful candidates receive one of the following marks: pass, merit and distinction and are awarded a certificate.
