RTG (Réamhtheastas Gaeilge)
The RTG was established by the Institiúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann (ITÉ), the Linguistics Institute of Ireland. It is based on the Council of Europe's Waystage Level specification. Candidates should be able to communicate in a number of standard everyday situations.
Structure
- Reading - The reading section consists of 30 items and is based on articles and advertisements from newspapers and magazines and simple literary and historical texts. Candidates respond by matching items, or answering yes/no and open questions.
- Writing - The writing section consists of gap-filling exercises and a short message composition in the form of a comment, note or postcard.
- Listening - There are 30 task items in the listening section. These include extracting basic information from a variety of text types, including radio broadcasts, simple exchanges, such as introductions and simple transactional exchanges, such as requests for information.
- Speaking - The speaking section lasts eight to 10 minutes and consists of an individual interview with the examiner. Candidates have to introduce themselves, express opinions on a variety of everyday topics and perform two simple role-plays.
Results
Speaking and listening each carry 25% of the marks, reading 30% and writing 20%.Successful candidates receive one of the following marks: pass, merit and distinction and are awarded a certificate.
