National Foundation Certificate

The Irish National Foundation Certificate was developed by the National Council for Vocational Awards (NCVA). It is a pre-vocational certificate testing the candidate's personal and practical skills and knowledge. This is the first step of the NCVA qualifications giving recognition for achievements and learning progress. The Foundation Certificate is recognised as the minimum entry requirement for national certificate courses.

Structure

The NCVA specifies the requirements for all certificates and all certificates are modular in structure. This certificate is awarded to learners who meet the required standard in a total of eight modules, comprising of three core modules (communications, mathematics, personal effectiveness or personal and interpersonal skills) and any five elective modules from the list of approved modules.

Results

A Record of Achievement is awarded to a learner who successfully completes one or more Foundation modules. Credits may be accumulated over a period of time towards the achievement of the National Foundation Certificate.
