Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Elementary - Intermediate
The HSK Chinese Proficiency Test was established by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. HSK Elementary-Intermediate is designed for candidates who have taken 400-2,000 hours of Modern Chinese and have mastered 2,000-5,000 Chinese words and certain rules of grammar. The certificate of HSK Elementary-Intermediate serves as a requirement to enter a college or university in China and as a reference for employers to assess job applicants' Chinese language proficiency.
Structure
HSK Elementary-Intermediate is a 170-item with the first 154 items are multiple-choice and items 155-170 are a gap-filling test of comprehension. The exam is divided into four subtests:
- Listening; 50 items (35 minutes)
- Sentence structure; 30 items (20 minutes)
- Reading; 50 items (60 minutes)
- Cloze test; 40 items (30 minutes)
Results
Score ranges from 0–400. Candidates who have obtained more than 152 points are awarded the following grades/levels of proficiency:
Certificate /Elementary
- Grade C - Level 3 - 152-188 points
- Grade B - Level 4 - 189-225 points
- Grade A - Level 5 – 226-262 points
Certificate/Intermediate
- Grade C - Level 6 – 263-299 points
- Grade B - Level 7 – 300-336 points
- Grade A - Level 8 – 337-400 points
Validity
The HSK certificate has permanent validity, whereas the grade received, as certification for foreign students to enter a college or university in China, is valid for two years (beginning from the date when the test session is administered).
