South Africa

In general
For entering the country an international passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended length of stay is required.

A visa is required by all except the following nations:

  • Nationals of Germany, Austria, EU countries (except for Cyprus, Hungary, Poland and Slovak Republic for up to 30 days; Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia who do require a visa), Canada for up to 90 days; Japan and the USA for stays of up to 90 days;
  • Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Israel, Jamaica, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, St Vincent & the Grenadines, San Marino, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Uruguay and Venezuela for stays of up to 90 days;
  • Nationals of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Gabon, Guyana, Hong Kong (SAR), Jordan, Korea (Rep), Lesotho, Macao (SAR), Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Namibia, Peru, Seychelles, Swaziland, Thailand, Turkey and Zambia for stays of up to 30 days;



Visa application

In order to apply for a visa for South Africa one has to submit the following documents:

  • A valid international passport (valid at least 6 months beyond intended stay)
  • 2 recent passport photos
  • 1 application form (available online)
  • Visa fee in cash or by post order
  • A return ticket or ticket for your onward journey to another country
  • A letter of invitation from the employer (company) specifying the reason for the trip and the length of stay
  • A valid residence permit
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay



Please note

Transit visa: Travelers continuing their onward journey by the same or first connecting aircraft, providing they hold onward or return documentation do not need a transit visa. Some nationals do require a visa (please check for more information).

Residence permit: Foreigners, regardless of nationality and visa type obtain a residence permit on the border when entering the country. A visa is not a guarantee for entering South Africa.

Students and Work permit: Student visas and work permissions have to be issued in your home country.
