In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is required.

Nationals of the following countries are allowed to travel as tourists or visitors with their valid ID cards:

  • EU nationals, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Norway


A visa is required by all except the following nations traveling for a period not exceeding 3 months:

  • Australia, Canada, Japan and the USA
  • Nationals of Andorra, Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Fiji, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Kiribati, Korea (Rep. of), Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Tuvalu and Vatican City;
  • Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi-Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, when in possession of a valid Schengen visa (multiple-entry visa)



Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for Switzerland one has to submit the following documents:

  • A valid international passport (valid at least 6 months beyond intended stay)
  • A recent passport photo (with your name written on the back of the photo
  • 1 application form (available online)
  • Visa fee in cash or by post order
  • A return ticket or ticket for your onward journey to another country
  • Hotel reservation or an invitation letter
  • A letter of invitation from the employer (company) specifying the reason for the trip and the length of stay (for business visa only
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay


Please note

Transit visa: Direct transit travelers do not need a visa. Transit visas are issued to nationals wishing to pass through Switzerland or continuing on a connecting flight to another country. Holders of transit visas must continue their journey within 48 hours. Stateless persons need a transit visa and have to apply for it in advance. Citizens of the following countries do not require a transit visa if they have a valid visa for a EU country: Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Angola, Bangladesh, Congo (Dem. Rep.), Ghana, Guinea, India, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
