Austria

In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is required except for the following nationals who can travel with their valid ID cards:

  • EU countries, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and Switzerland


A visa is required by all except the following nationals:

  • Nationals of EU countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland for an unlimited period; Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and Cyprus for stays of up to three months
  • Nationals of Japan for a period of up to six months
  • Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Ecuador, Guatemala, Israel, Jamaica, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, San Marino, Singapore, Uruguay and Venezuela for stays of up to three months
  • Nationals of any of the Schengen member states who hold permanent residency are entitled to re-enter the Schengen area without a visa, provided proof of residence and a valid passport are submitted



Validity

Varies depending on the nationality and visa type. An extension is not possible but you can always reissue a new visa. Maximum validity of a visa: six months. Maximum validity of a transit visa: five days.


Visa application

In order to apply for a visa for Austria one has to submit the following documents:

  • A valid international passport
  • A recent passport photo
  • Application form
  • Visa fee in cash or by post order
  • Health insurance


Please note

Schengen visa: The nationals of the countries which are required to have a Schengen visa, are obliged to obtain the visa before arrival in Austria. The Schengen visa can be issued only in the country where the person has his/her permanent address registration. Travellers visiting just one Schengen country should apply to the Consulate of that country; travellers visiting more than one Schengen country should apply to the Consulate of the country chosen as the main destination or the country they will enter first (if they have no main destination).
