In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is required.
A visa is required by all except the following nations:
- EU nations and Switzerland for a three-month tourist visit
- Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Macedonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Lesotho, Malta, Mauritius, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Surinam, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and the USA for a stay of up to three months
- Nationals of Brunei for a tourist stay of up to 14 days

Varies depending on the visa type and the applicant's nationality.
Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for Japan one has to submit the following documents:
- A valid international passport and a photocopy of the passport
- A recent passport photo
- One application form
- Visa fee in cash or by post order
- A return ticket or tickets for your onward journey
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay
- An invitation letter when paying a visit to someone
- Reservation for a hotel or at a tourist agency (together with a receipt)
Please note
Children: The official ID card for children (with no passport photo up to 10 years old and with an attached photo for children up to 16) is a sufficient document for entering the country.
Extension: An extension of a further three months is available on request. Such extensions are at the discretion of the immigration authorities in Japan and may not be granted.
