In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is needed with a validity of not less than six months beyond the intended length of stay.

Exceptions to the general rule are nationals from the following countries who can travel with their valid ID card (a passport is also recommended) only:

  • EU countries, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Hong Kong


All except the following nations require a visa for a period not exceeding three months:

  • Andorra, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, British Dependent Territories, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Jamaica, Korea (Rep. of), Latvia, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Nauru, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela, Samoa and Zimbabwe

Depending on visa type and nationality.


Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for Ireland, one has to submit the following documents:

  • A valid international passport (validity at least six months beyond intended stay)
  • Recent passport photos
  • Application form
  • Visa fee in cash or by post order


Please note

Free visa: Nationals of the following countries get a visa free of charge:

  • Spouses of EU-nationals, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Yugoslavia, Columbia, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Uganda


Children:
The official ID card for children (with no passport photo up 10 years old and with an attached photo for children up to 16) is a sufficient document for entering the country. (Tip: Some air carriers such as Ryanair require passports with pictures of all their passengers. In this case having your children names in your passport is not enough.)
