In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is needed.
Exceptions from the general rule are nationals of the following countries who can travel only with their valid ID card:
- Germany, Austria, nationals of the EU countries for tourist visits not exceeding three months
- Nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway and Switzerland holding a valid national ID card for a tourist visit of less than six months and in possession of a British Visitor's Card available from travel agencies
A visa issued before arrival in the UK is required by citizens of the following nationalities:
- Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Burkina Fasso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, China, Columbia, Comoros, Congo, Croatia, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Macedonia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Syria, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Yemen, Yugoslavia and Zambia
Validity
The tourist visa is issued for six months or for one year on request. The transit visa is valid for seven days.
Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for the UK one has to submit the following documents:
- A valid international passport (validity at least six months beyond intended stay)
- Two recent passport photos
- Application form
- Hotel reservation
- Visa fee in cash or by post order
- A travel insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay
Please note
Business visa: A letter from your employer giving the reason for your visit to the UK including its duration and details on who will be covering the costs, or a letter from the company to be visited stating the reason for the visit and its duration has to support your application.
Transit visa: Travellers in transit do not need a visa if they are in possession of a confirmed ticket and valid documents for their onward journey to another country and their trip is within 24 hours. Nationals of the following countries always require a transit visa, even when not leaving the airport:
- Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Burundi, China, Ecuador, Eritrea, Gambia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Iran, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Columbia, Congo, Lebanon, Liberia, Macedonia, Moldavia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia and Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Turkey, North Cyprus, Uganda and Vietnam as well all people in possession of Palestinian documents
Children: The official ID card for children (with no passport photo up to 10 years old and with photo attached for children up to 16) is a sufficient document for entering the country. Children up to 16 years of age can be included in their parent's passport.
