Costa Rica

In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is needed with a validity of not less than six months beyond the intended length of stay.

A visa for nationals from the following countries is not needed in case that they are visiting Costa Rica as tourists:

  • Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the rest of the EU nations (excluding Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia and Cyprus), (Estonia, Ireland and Slovakia up to 30 days) for a period up to 90 days

  • Nationals of Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, Trinidad & Tobago, the USA and Uruguay for a stay of up to 90 days;

  • Nationals of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Chile, Czech Republic, Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Iceland, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Oman, Philippines, Qatar, Russian Federation, St Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Suriname, Taiwan, Turkey, the UAE, Vatican City and Venezuela for a period up to 30 days

  • Nationals of the UK and its dependencies for stays of up to 90 days



Validity

Valid 30-90 days, depending on the nationality. Extensions can be provided on request.


Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for Costa Rica, one has to submit the following documents:

  • A valid international passport (validity at least six months beyond intended stay)
  • Two recent passport photographs
  • Application form (it can also be downloaded online from the homepages of the Embassy and Consulate departments throughout the world)
  • Visa fee paid in cash or by postal order
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of stay in the form of bank account statements, credit cards
  • A photocopy of the return ticket


Please note

Work/Employment visa: An original and signed work contract should be presented together with medical tests (a negative HIV-Test) and an authenticated birth certificate.

Transit: Travellers in transit who do not leave the airport do not need a visa (with the exception of the following nationalities: Afghanistan, Algeria, China (except Hong Kong), Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria and travelers in possession of Palestinian documents who need a transit visa authorized by the Immigration Department in San José).
