In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is needed with a validity of not less than six months beyond the length of intended stay. A visa is required. Germany, Switzerland and Austria nationals can stay in Hong Kong (according to the current regulations) up to six months without a visa. If you intend to study, work or do business in Hong Kong you will need a special visa and a working permission. You have to apply for these types of visas at the Chinese Embassy at least six weeks before departure.
Validity
Normally three months; a transit visa: five to seven days.
Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for China, one has to submit the following documents:
- A valid international passport (validity at least 6 months beyond intended stay)
- A recent passport photograph
- Application form (it can be also downloaded online from the homepages of the Embassy and Consulate departments throughout the world).
- Visa fee - paid in cash or by postal order
Please note
Work/Employment visa: If you wish to enter China for the purpose of work, a 'Z' visa must be issued by the authorized Chinese unit, and the Chinese Labour Ministry must issue a Work Permit for Aliens. A photocopy of this Work Permit should be submitted together with the application documents. In cases of stay longer than 6 months an AIDS test is required.
Hong Kong visa: Citizens of Germany, Austria, the rest of the EU nationals, UK citizens (for up to six months) and Switzerland nationals (for up to three months) do not need a visa.
Tibet visa: Individual trips are not possible and only organized tourist groups are allowed to enter Tibet. More information can be obtained at Chinese Embassies, the Tibet Tourism Administration or the Tibet Tourism Office.
Transit visa: Travellers in transit do not need a visa if they are in possession of a confirmed ticket and valid documents for their onward journey from China to another country and are continuing their trip within 24 hours without leaving the airport. These terms are valid for citizens from the USA only at the Beijing airport.
