In general
For entering the country a valid international passport is needed with a validity at least three months beyond the intended length of stay.
A visa is required for all nationalities except for nationals of New Zealand holding a valid passport.
In addition to the usual visa label placed in your international passport issued by Australian Embassies throughout the world, as a national from the following countries you can obtain your visa in an electronic from - the so called ETAS - an invisible electronic visa. You can obtain this electronic visa free of charge, without completing an application form directly at the authorised travel agencies after booking a holiday to Australia if you are a national of:
- Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Andorra, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, The UK, Greece, Island, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, the USA.

Varies depending on the visa type and the applicant's nationality.
Visa application
In order to apply for a visa for Australia, one has to submit the following documents:
- A valid international passport (validity at least six months beyond intended stay)
- One recent passport-type photograph
- Application form (it can also be downloaded online from the homepages of the Embassy and Consulate departments throughout the world)
- Visa fee paid in cash or by postal order
Please note
Bank reference and proof of sufficient funds: People under 30 years of age have to submit a reasonable bank statement as a proof of their possibility to finance their trip.
Children: Children are also required to have an ETAS and in case that they are included in their parent's passports they receive the visa free of charge.
Business visa: You have to provide an invitation letter, explaining the purpose of your visit from the company in Australia or your company overseas accompanying your documents.
Occupational trainee visa (Internship): The Australian employer needs to obtain a Form 913 from the nearest office of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), complete it, and return it back to the DIMIA office in Australia. Processing of the application (also called Nomination) may take a few weeks. The trainer will get an approval letter and can pass it on to you for you to submit together with your application.
