Intensive Classes!  Modern campus!  Free Activities!  International friends!  These are some of the reasons why every year over 2200 students choose English Language Centre (ELC)  programs to improve their English skills.  Since 1970 we have offered 3-12 week intensive programs to help students achieve their personal, professional and academic goals!

  • 12-Week Intensive English programs strengthen English skills for upper beginner to advanced-level students, and include specialized elective classes and a choice of general or academic streams for students at higher levels.
  • University Admission Preparation programs, with a strong academic focus, prepare you for a successful experience at an English-speaking university  *A passing score satisfies the UVic English language requirement*
  • TOEFL & TOEIC Preparation coursesimprove your exam skills and scores
  • English Work Experience programs improve your English while you gain professional experience during a full-time internship
  • 3-6 Week Monthly English programs focus on your speaking and listening skills during a short vacation or break between your university semesters

The ELC is one of the oldest and largest departments of its kind in Canada.  It is centrally located on the University of Victoria's spacious, modern campus, close to the library, computer labs, cafeterias and bus terminal.  Our students enjoy English programs of the highest quality, and are a part of a vibrant student community at the #1 Comprehensive University in Canada (Maclean's Magazine, 2008, 2007).  

ELC programs begin every month and you can combine them according to your needs and interests.  You can study English for 1 month, 6 months, a year  - or more!   Depending on the ELC program, you will attend 20-30 class hours per week, and outside of class you will enjoy a full calendar of social activities, unlimited access to UVic’s computer and language laboratories, libraries and recreational facilities.  A Study Centre and Pronunciation Clinic are also available for students in the 12-week program.
