Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA)

The Intensive Malay Language Proficiency Course (IMALPC) at ATMA was established as a result of the Consortium of Teaching Indonesia Malaysia (COTIM) programme in 1999. From humble beginnings of only two students from the United States of America, now the classes continue to grow and attracts worldwide attention. So far, around 300 students from all over the world have enrolled and completed their courses at IMALPC, ATMA. They have come from USA, UK, Canada, Finland, German, France, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia. Currently, there are three internationally acclaimed universities which have recognized and acknowledged the teaching of Malay at ATMA, namely Konstanz University of Applied Sciences (German) La Trobe University, Melborne (Australia) and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Japan). Every year these universities continue to send their students on the IMALPC programme at ATMA, UKM.

Course duration
Each module is between 5 to 6 weeks long i.e. the equivalent to 100 hours for each level of course. The 100-hour duration includes the following aspects:
• Classroom teaching (theory)
• Cultural and Language Workshop (Practical)
• Interactive field trips – outings (Practical)
• Revision sessions
• Assessment tests

Types of courses:

1. Individual Intensive Course (minimum of 50 hours
*This course is offered year-round on demand.
2. Intensive Course, 5 – 6 weeks (100 hours for each level)
* However, this course may be offered on a shorter duration, i.e. 1 or 2 weeks, according
to the student’s request, which may be custom designed at the discretion of both the
teacher and the student.

IMALPC teachers are experienced and trained in teaching for foreign speakers. The courses shall be conducted by several native speakers of Malay teachers in order for the students to be able to sharpen their listening skills. Some of the teachers have experience teaching foreign speakers at universities abroad or in local schools.
