It is a language placement test for non-native speakers of French who wish to obtain a simple, effective and precise evaluation of their general language skills for professional or personal reasons.
Structure
TCF has three required and two optional components:
Three compulsory tests:
Test items take the form of multi-choice questions with 80 items concerning listening comprehension (30 items), grammatical structures (20 items) and reading comprehension (30 items).
Optional tests:
They are composed of one speaking test (face-to-face interview taking 15 minutes) and one written expression test (six writing tasks within 105 minutes).
Scores obtained in written expression and speaking tests may be recognised as unit credits for the DELF and DALF diplomas.
Results
Test scores provide an accurate description of the candidate's language ability using the six-level proficiency scale of the Council of Europe.
All candidates sitting the TCF receive a test certificate, indicating:
- Candidate's scores and grades in required and/or optional tests;
- A description of the competencies covered by each level.
